Why do so many Americans believe in ghosts?

I read an NBC story about how more than half of Americans believe in ghosts.
I have also read somewhere else how one third of houses on the market have had their asking price reduced because they may be ‘haunted’.

But ghosts can’t physically exist. It is not possible.

All of these surveys, reports and articles that I have read (admittedly on the internet) don’t conclude the reason for this?

Does anyone have any ideas?

P.S. It is fine by me but I am just interested in the Psychology behind this. Thanks.

I’m sure its not just americans. If they took that survey else where its also probably high. Check out some youtube videos. There are some pretty freaky ones on there.
