All online marketers know it is important to do keyword research when marketing online. We need our keywords to be unique so we can rank highly in the search engines. The research shows that most people when searching online will click on first 3 links and rarely go down the page. 80% of clicks are on the first 3 items of the searches. So you need to be at the top. This is why you need to pick a Keyword that you can compete with and get in the top 3 positions or at least on the first page.

Many who are starting out with their online campaigns are wanting to know about free keyword research tools and which are the best tools for researching and finding the best keywords for your campaigns.

Free keyword research tools

There are 3 Free main keyword tools you can use. While there are paid tools you can use, the free ones work quite well but might take more time to find all the information you are looking for.

The first free keywords tool is the Google Adwords Keyword Tool and Google Adwords Traffic Estimator.

To assess the search volume numbers of your selected keyword the Google Adwords tool is the most accurate. Remember you want to look at search volume as you want a good search volume for your keyword but not a lot that there is too much competition. From you keyword research decide on 10 keywords/keyword phrases you are going to target. Look for less than 50,000 competing websites, to get a keyword that you can target and compete for number one spot.

Wordtracker is another free keywords tool that gives you trends and the daily search volume of the top 100 related terms to your keyword.

You can see the number of competing pages in Google, and the traffic you would get if you had the number 1 position on Google for that keyword term. 50-100 visitors to that keyword per day is a good keyword to target.

SEO Keyword Research tools

Another great tool which is free to download and gives me visual results on all my searches is the SEO tool on firefox. Siimply use mozilla firefox as your browser which you can download for free. Also the SEO tool is free to download. It will show you page ranks, links etc.

Paid Keyword Research Tool

The truth is these free tools take time. For a paid keyword tool that finds all the information for you a great tool which you can get on a free trial and then only a one time payment so you have it forever and get all your upgrades for free is Market Samurai

Market Samurai makes it easy to generate a sample of keywords in your niche and than filter then until you find 5 – 10 keywords that are highly relevant, have traffic of approx 100 visitors a day, has less than 50,000 competing web pages, and low strength of competition. Market Samurai also allows you to find content such as articles, videos etc related to your keywords and research domain names. A great tool you can test out for free also.

This is a very important component of your campaigns,you can have great content but if you are not seen it doesn’t matter. Use the tools and get your site, articles, videos etc ranked up in the top 3 on the search engines.

Getting page one ranking on Google is very difficult for most people. The secret is finding keywords that are not so competitive and typically this means you need to find long tail keywords that have not been discovered by a lot of people. That is what any keyword tool that you purchase should do, at a minimum, and that is where I spend a good chunk of my time – mining for long tail keywords.
